Clinical
Training Opportunities 1.
Nashville CPE Partnership Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) (Application) is practical theological training for persons in pastoral ministry. It is suitable for religious leaders, lay persons, seminarians and others who have a sufficient degree of theological knowledge to benefit from it. Ordinarily for a Residency, we expect a Masters of Divinity Degree (M.Div. or equivalent), ordination or endorsement of faith group and a previous unit of CPE. For an Extended Unit, we also accept qualified lay persons and students. Most working in the Intensive Summer Unit are either seminary students or others on sabbatical. The Residency and Summer Intensive Unit are full-time. Applicants for all positions will serve on-call time and will need transportation. There are certain other health screening requirements of each institution which must be met before actually beginning the placement. The Pastoral Care Specialist Training Program, at a minimum, is a seventy-seven contact hour program that meets in four hour blocks weekly between August and December, exclusive of holidays. Didactic seminars, case conferences, and peer group experiences are utilized to prepare participants to apply for membership in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors at the Pastoral Care Specialist level.
Persons who seek to become certified at the Fellow level in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and/or desire to be a Certified Pastoral Therapist in the state of Tennessee may enroll in a two to three year program known as The Clinical Pastoral Therapist Training Program. Enrollees participate in individual and group supervisory experiences as well as various three semester hour courses which are integral to certification. In some cases training plans can be formulated so that portions of these training modalities may be applied to other certifications and state licenses. PCCT has an established training affiliation with the Ph.D. Program in Religion and Personality at the Graduate Department of Religion of Vanderbilt University and the D. Min. Program in Pastoral Counseling and Psychotherapy at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary of Evanston, Illinois. Training affiliations with other graduate programs may be negotiated.
The Advanced Practitioner Training Program (Application) is designed for licensed or certified therapists who seek formation experiences which promote professional integration and skill development at the interface of spirituality and intrapsychic and interpersonal processes. This three-trimester interdisciplinary program is composed of clinical case group supervision and these three semester hour courses: (1) "Theological Method and Clinical Pastoral Therapy"; (2) "Pastoral Diagnosis and Clinical Pastoral Therapy; and (3) "When Religion Gets Sick". Advanced Practitioners (Application) interested in becoming a certified clinical supervisior with one or more cognate groups may enroll in The Clinical Supervision Training Program. This program is focused on the participants' formation of a personal theory of clinical supervision and clinical supervisory skill development. During the first trimester participants take the forty-five contact hour course "Clinical Supervision: Constructs and Theory Formulation" as well as thirty contact hours in the "Supervision of Clinical Supervision Practicum". The "Supervisor of Clinical Supervision Practicum" is lengthened to forty-five contact hours in the second trimester.
